Neighborhood structure determines properties of a street network, integrated with block typology, and consequently the range of lot size and shape – contributing to a richness and resilience of townscape within the 5 minute pedestrian shed.
  • ASSEMBLY: neighborhoods are configured by block types – Center / General / Edge – each condition with their particular elements and traits.
  • BUILDING & LOT: building type and use organize by location along a pedestrian transect: center-to-edge; lot size proceeds from the intended urban form of buildings.
  • VARIATION: size and shape of blocks may adjust; diversity comes from housing type and price, social demographic and cohesion, control of public-private gradient, and mediation of of adjacent traffic impact.
  • CONFIGURATION: block perimeters define street edge with lots enfronting street spaces; block interiors run from minimal /utilitarian to elaborated domains of courts /mews.
  • ADAPTATION: change in economy, housing or retail markets, age of buildings, may undermine viability of places – requiring rehabilitation of townscape through traditional tactics.
